Job description

Under the direction and guidance of the Director, Division of Conference Management, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: 

  • Directs the day-to-day operations as well as long range planning of the Interpretation Service; 
  • Ensures that interpretation requirements of meetings serviced by the Division in Geneva or other locations are met and monitors client satisfaction; 
  • Manages the resources of the Service, guides, develops and trains staff, evaluates their performance, ensures that management, planning and accountability systems are in place to manage the resources of the Service in a transparent and efficient manner; 
  • Continuously adjusts the capacity of the Service to the workload to ensure optimum capacity utilization; 
  • Identifies the long-term interpretation needs of the Service and recruits accordingly; 
  • Recruits staff for the Service taking due account of gender balance and other institutional values; oversees the day-to-day and long-term planning of work in light of workload projections, including the appropriate recruitment of temporary staff; 
  • Coordinates with interpretation services at four duty stations of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) and other Secretariat locations within the framework of the Integrated Global Management; 
  • Ensures the implementation of DGACM policies, procedures and practices and participates in their elaboration and implementation; 
  • Acts as alternate Chairperson of the Board of the Competitive Examinations for Interpreters; 
  • Acts as Chairperson of the Classification Board for Freelance Interpreters; 
  • Follows professional and technological trends in the field of interpretation through active participation in such mechanisms as IAMLADP and HINTS and contributes to reflection on emerging issues such as remote interpretation and sign-language interpretation; 
  • Acts as Conference Coordinator for major United Nations conferences when designated as such; 
  • Acts as Officer-in-Charge of the Division of Conference Management, when required; 
  • Leads team members efforts to collect and analyze data and provides insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Ensures that everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need.
