At the international level the International Standards Organisation (ISO) is working on a standard for legal interpreting; ISO/AWI 20228 “Guidelines for Legal Interpreting”. According to ISO, “a standard is a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose.”
The European Union has adopted a number of directives related to interpretation in legal settings;
Directive 2010/64/EU on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings. A European Commission report on the implementation was published in 2018.
Directive 2012/13/EU on the right to information in criminal proceedings. A European Commission report on the implementation was published in 2018.
Directive 2012/29/EU establishing minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime. A European Parliament resolution on the implementation was adopted in 2018.
