This year’s edition of the EMCI Training of Trainers is organized in hybrid mode by the consortium in cooperation with DG SCIC and DG LINC at KU Leuven (Brussels campus) on 14-15 March. Two main important topics will be covered: the use of technology in the classroom and mental health in interpreter training.On the first day, Andrea Seidenstuecker (DG LINC) will talk about “speech-making using AI tools”, Bart Defrancq (Ghent University) will tackle “In-booth and out-booth experience with a CAI-tool” as well as “Interpreting technology in the curriculum: large avenues and thin lines”, while Susana Rodríguez (Smarterp) will focus on “Innovation in interpretation: a deep dive into the SmarTerp technology”. The day will end with a round table which will allow participants to exchange and to draft a list of good practices.On the second day, Julie Johnson (Middlebury Institute of International Studies) will talk about „Being Well: Teaching, Learning & Working Well” and Krzysztof Kredens (Aston University) about how interpreters can cope with traumatic information.

The Department of Interpreting and Translation at the University of Bologna – Forlì Campus - will host the 5th edition of the annual EMCI Student Meeting from 24 to 27 January 2023. 75 students from ten member universities will gather for a multilingual training event meant to give them the opportunity to practise, exchange good practices and network. As usual, the traditional partners of the EMCI consortium, DG SCIC and DG LINC, will support the event. At this edition, we are happy to welcome Ms Manuela Brovarone, Deputy Head of Unit for Multilingualism and Knowledge Development at DG SCIC, and Ms Cathy Pearson, Head of Multilingualism Unit at DG LINC. “Two years experience of online conference interpreter training: taking stock” – this is the enticing topic of the training event organized by the EMCI in cooperation with DG SCIC and DG LINC at ELTE on 12 and 13 May 2022. Trainers from EMCI member universities and representatives of the EU Institutions interpreting services will share their experiences related to on site and online teaching, debate on the advantages and disadvantages of each method and conclude on a list of best practices.As usual, participants will also record speeches in their A languages for the Speech Repository.

The Role of Technology in Conference Interpreter Training Edited By María Dolores Rodríguez Melchor, Ildikó Horváth and Kate FergusonInformation and communication technologies (ICTs) have radically changed the way we live and work, and the field of interpreting is no exception. Interpreter training today needs to prepare students for this new professional reality and ICTs are increasingly being incorporated into the interpreting classroom, with devices such as the digital pen, double-track recording tools, transcription and annotation software, and speech banks serving as valuable training tools.With the aim of exploring some of the new developments taking place in the field of conference interpreter training in the digital age, this volume brings together a selection of contributions by experts in the field. From 27 to 29 February 2020, EMCI organized a Training of Trainers seminar in training simultaneous at the intermediate level “Half-Way House in Simultaneous: Diagnosis and Fostering Progress” at the St. Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation, Herzen University, St. Petersburg, Russia. The main trainer was Ian Newton, lecturer at FTI-UNIGE and former ILO Chief Interpreter. SCIT trainers were active participants, contributing their own experience and expertise to the discussions, and testing new approaches and techniques with SCIT’s current students. The logic of the discussions followed the students’ expected transition from simple well-structured narratives on familiar topics to more demanding speeches, with special attention paid to stress management and building up the interpreter’s stamina and resilience. On January 30, 2020, Mr Mirko Altieri held the latest workshops about the use of tablets in interpreter's training and work. The University of Trieste bought 10 identical tablets (Samsung) for the students to practice during the workshop. Mr Altieri explained how to use tablets to prepare for an assignment, how to prepare for sight translation (with annotations in the text or by splitting the screen), how to use the tablet for consecutive note taking with the help of different applications (Bamboo Paper, Notability, FilNote, Squid etc.). Students could choose which side of the Samsung smart pen they will use. At the end, the trainer presented also Interpreter's Help and video materials from SCIC. The EMCI was invited to attend the 50th Anniversary Stakeholder Conference co-organised by the Turkish Association of Conference Interpreters and AIIC Turkey regions on December 20-21 2019.
